Community Mentoring Program

Community Mentoring program
General Introduction of the program
The community mentoring program is a community-based mentorship initiative funded by Patrimoine Canada that brings together seniors raised in Canada and newcomers.
Its goal is to strengthen linguistic learning, mutual support, and cultural exchange, while building meaningful connections across generations.
This free program matches participants based on their needs, interests, and skills. Together, they can practice English and/or French, share life experiences, and exchange services such as language practice, daily help, cultural knowledge, or other forms of support.
Whether you are a newcomer looking to improve your English or French, or a senior eager to share your experience while learning something new, this program is for you!
This flexible program requires only a commitment of 1–2 hours per week and offers optional group activities to enrich the experience.
How the program works
This flexible program requires only a commitment of 1–2 hours per week and offers optional group activities to enrich the experience.
The program relies on three key roles:
- Agents of intercultural connection: They ensure the smooth running of the program and they will organize five cultural activities for participants, send check-in messages to participants every two weeks, and report challenges or communication issues to the coordination team.
- Seniors: Seniors who have lived in Canada for over 15 years and are 50+. They share their cultural knowledge, experience, and language skills while benefiting from meaningful exchanges and new friendships.
- Newcommers: Newcomers who arrived in Canada less than 10 years ago (or who still need support with language or integration). They practice French or English, discover the community, and contribute their own talents and services to their match.
- An example of services that Newcomers can offer are: household help, grocery shopping, snow shoveling, lawn mowing, childcare support, computer assistance, cultural exchange, or companionship for walks and outings.
